May 5th, I went with my cigar aficionado, Marty, to the Holy Blossom synagogue to hear Caroline B. Glick, a Chicago native who had moved to Israel and joined the army. She had escalated to officer, to negotiator, to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s (1966-1999) assistant foreign policy adviser, to student once more, and then journalist and editor. www.carolineglick.com
What amazed me was that we were on the same page about the Global War and how Israel (and America) are shackled by the left and appeasers -- especially by the coalition of parties and Democrat congress and senate. When President Bush had ordered the “Shock & Awe” on Iraq I had thought this was the right move for several reasons, regardless of the WMDs, which were either bragged about or disappeared. 1) Removal of the Hussein regime. 2) To widen the war from just Afghanistan. 3) To be right beside Iran the prime funding source of the Axis of Evil. 4) To let the entire militant Muslim world know it doesn’t matter what they call themselves, al Qaeda, Taliban, Hezbollah, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, Saladin’s Martyrs, because democracy, America, Britain, Canada, Australia will not leave Israel alone. The European Union was questionable, since they had opened their borders to trade and immigrants, but now to their regret.
It seems the pressure from the UN, EU, Islamic organizations, the media of the left, and tenured professors have influenced the populace with Neville Chamberlain’s school of appeasement in WWII. He would have appreciated Caroline Glick as much as he did Gertrude Bell (the Desert Queen and ally of Lawrence of Arabia) in WWI who was the only woman that drew up the borders of Mesopotamia.
In Caroline’s book “Shackled Warrior: Israel and the Global Jihad” she states that this was a “prolonged war of attrition”. Absolutely! They can give up many martyrs, and hide amongst the moderates that want modernity, to frustrate the Infidel. Caroline said, “The path of jihad is the path of terror. Using terror the jihadists believe that they can destroy the confidence of citizens of free societies and so coerce them to bend their will.”
At the end of her speech, in the sanctuary, organized by the temple, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, and Canadian Coalition For Democracies (http://www.canadiancoalition.com/), there was a standing ovation from a packed house.
Marty was pleased that I had encouraged him to join me because Caroline Glick has gumption and clarified things. I thought she has a little bit of Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and my feisty Celtic-Canadian friend Marie, and perhaps Caroline ought to be Prime Minister during the continuation of the supposed peace talks. Her resolve was that piece of the mosaic puzzle in the world kaleidoscope in motion which I required to corroborate what I had been thinking, and to complete the picture of Daniel Pipes, Bernard Lewis, David Frum, Mark Steyn, George Crile, Victor Davis Hanson and Michael Ledeen, whose books and articles I had read.
And from all this punditry and professorial knowledge I remain pro Zionism, even if they try to make it a pejorative word. The left, particularly NPR (National Public Radio) which invited leftist Jews to speak about Israel during the 60th year of statehood, would like Israel to be more of a normal, liberal state, even more secular, allow more Arabs, Muslims into the country.
Maybe this would be acceptable if all the nations in the Middle East, the Arabs and Persians, would allow the same equality. Ha!
This unresolved conflict can be resolved with power first, by military action, then order Iran to open the doors to check their nuclear facilities “or else” as ballsy Hillary Clinton recently said during her campaign if they threatened or attacked Israel.
If only.
